The ‘Collegiate Shag’ is an energetic partner dance that originated in the 1920s-1930s during the swing era. It is a very dynamic dance that focuses on challenging footwork with a lot of hops and kicks – this separates it from other forms of swing dance.

In the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, “Shag” was a very broad term used for many local partner dances. The British connotation of the word hadn’t hit the US, and in fact “shagging” was a normal, socially acceptable term.
